As producers of The Real World we are always watching the roommates, and trying to predict the behavior and changing relationships we see before us.  The dynamics in the Brooklyn house are no different.  The first three episodes really demonstrate how this group of strangers grow and change.

In the first week, we saw two distinct groups that formed in the house.  Group 1, we referred to as the “Politically Correct” group.  This included JD, the gay man who bonded instantly with Sarah a bisexual from San Francisco.  He then embraced Katelynn, a transgendered woman, sensing they shared a lot in common.  With Baya, Devyn, and Scott they initially felt like the family that JD hoped could be.

In Group 2, was “D and D”, a name that the Politically Correct group created for Chet and Ryan which stood for “Dumb and Dumber”.  Chet, being a right wing Mormon; and Ryan, a small town straight guy from Gettysburg, didn’t quite demonstrate the same maturity level or experience with different lifestyles as the Politically Correct.  Their teasing of JD, and the condom prank led to dysfunction in the family.

But this group dynamic almost immediately started to crumble when the Politically Correct learned that Ryan was a war veteran.  It’s pretty hard to put down anyone who serves our country, and Ryan’s status rose with the Politically Correct.  And when he kissed the transvestite at the club, he was warmly embraced as one who was open to new ideas.  Chet, as the chaste Mormon, gained respect for sticking up for his views and when the roommates saw his close personal ties to his real family.

The next step of development we noticed was of a more sexual nature testing the waters so to speak…would a relationship develop in Brooklyn?  Does she like me…do I like him?   We saw Ryan and Baya flirting, then withdrawing.  Scott and Devyn tested their relationship with a BFF-ometer and are waiting to see if they 'go up a few notches'.  Katelynn questioned her relationship with a boyfriend back home by going out on a date.

But on the show that airs this week, the group dynamic takes a dramatic turn.  Actions by JD will create in Devyn a feeling of mistrust that will never go away.  Ironically his behavior will prevent the close family bond that he desires.

As armchair psychologists that’s our take on the group dynamics.  What do you think?

A new episode premiers tonight at 10pm on MTV directly followed by an all new After Show!
