Vacations!  Every season on The Real World, the roommates get treated to an amazing vacation.  The trip to Cancun for the Hollywood roommates was no exception:  Parties, sailing, snorkeling, jungle excursions, dolphin swims…every day new activities and new adventures.  Wow, sounds like a great time?  Unless you’re part of the crew!

Taking the show on the road is no vacation!  We have to contend with bringing all our gear on the road with us: heavy cases of cameras, audio equipment, and lights – and getting everything successfully through customs.  Heavy lifting!


Plus we can’t afford to take everyone, so only half the crew goes – which means longer hours and less relief.  Shooting on the beach and in the water at first seems like a dream come true – until an unseen wave hits your video camera, and you shoot the last frames that camera will ever record.  Sploosh!  Zap! …then all is black.

And then there’s always that one crew member who didn’t heed the warning, and forgot sunscreen!  I can remember one crew person whose face was so red -- it hurt just to look at him!

Now if you’re a lucky crew person who goes on one of these shoots, you can’t wait for your shift to end so you can go out and enjoy yourself!  After a day of shooting in the hot sun you deserve to go out and party!  Taste the exotic food and drink!  Dance into the wee hours of the night!  But you forgot one important detail Mr-Party-Crew-Man: You’re not on vacation!  You can’t sleep this one off because you’ve got an 8am call!

Some mornings in Mexico, I’d enjoy getting up early and strolling down to the ‘tech’ room where the gear was stowed.  And I’d watch as the morning crew limp in to begin their work, sunglasses covering their blood-veined eyes.  They groan as they grab their cameras and boom poles from the pain of their sun burnt skin.  And now they must begin another day of chasing the roommates through the sand and the surf.


But hey, despite all the hardship, we loved shooting in Mexico.  We live for this stuff!  Ha!
