Alright, I get a lot of questions from people regarding my status in the military. I'm currently in what's called the I.R.R. which stands for Inactive Ready Reserve. Basically, I am just like normal civilian and I have no connection with the military at all.

When you join the military, it's always an eight-year contract. You then pick how many of those years you want to serve on active duty. I ended up spending three-and-a-half years on active duty as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division. I was honorably discharged in November 2006 and I immediately enrolled into college. I do not train anymore with anybody. I did not join the National Guard or Army Reserve like some people I know did in order to prevent being in the I.R.R. The I.R.R. is not bad, just people are afraid that they could be called back up to active duty. Since the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, thousands of people throughout the country have been called back to active duty, regardless of what they were doing with their personal lives. It's kinda like a backdoor draft. If units deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan and they don't have enough soldiers in their unit; they can, at their discretion, call people back who already have the training and experience and force them to fight another year. No matter how long they have been separated from the military- as long as it is still part of their first initial eight-year contract. I see it as a horrible policy because it takes people out of school, work, and family. People who have already served time in a combat zone. It is cheaper for the military and call-ups don't receive a bonus. Several others and myself decided that our time playing Army was done so we returned to living as civilians, returning to work and school.

Always in the back of my mind I fear that I could be called back up to Active Duty from now until 2010, but the chance of that happening is very slim. Only a small percentage of people are involuntarily called back and there is no way to avoid it. I really love being a civilian and I am concentrating on making a career and living my life. I pray that the wars cease soon so people do not have to go and those who have gone do not get yanked out of their personal lives to wear the uniform again.

There's always a chance it could happen, but life is full of chances and I hope I'm one of the lucky few that never get called back. I'm too busy doing other things. My fingers are crossed with Obama in the house.

    RYAN,
Thank you for everything you have done for this country. People can flap their gums talking trash on the military but it all comes down that they are the bastards that should be getting drilled and knocked some clearer sense into them. I hope the best for you in life and be safe soldier!! Much respect from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania... ohhh ahhh

I do not really understand why you are so aggrivated about what he said, hina. Ryan joining the army does not make him "stupid" at all. At least he has the courage and bravery to fight for his country, while people like you just sit there a bitch about it. (Do not got me wrong, I do not really like the idea of being over there in the first place but we are and I cannot do anything about that). Oh calling him "gay" for having as oppinion is just ignorant. Regaurdless of one's reason for voting for Obama, he is The President of The United States. If you think Obama is doing nothing right now, danm you are uneducated or at least you cannot read. All you have to do is pick up a news paper or magazine. Watch the new sometime since you seem to be good at lying around. Hey! Did you know you can read/watch the news right here, on your computer? Oh. My. God. It is like magic! On the plus side you do not even have to get up. I do not know how old you are but I am going to take a stab in the dark and say you are older then me, how pathetic. Dumbass.

You really need to calm down! This is Ryan's opinion of the government and our president. If all you can do when you read about those things is say hateful and racial things then say them where you know everyone feels the same way that you do instead of acting like a dick. If you don't like Ryan then why read his posts? if you don't like Obama that's too bad because he's the president for the next for years and maybe more so deal with it like an adult and quit whining like a baby!

Stop loss is a little different. If you're in a "mission-essential" job, military intelligence for example, and there is a shortage of people in those positions they can keep you beyond your contract even if you've finished your 8 years. Chances are they'd be keeping you in to deploy you somewhere and you will probably only be held by the stop loss for around a year, but it's still a shite-deal. You've finished you're contract, you should be allowed out, but they don't let you. In reality, the only party that is responsible for holding up their end of a military service contract is the person who enlists, the military can do whatever they want, decided not to pay education benefits, etc. This is kinda rare (it's bad for recruiting) but it does happen.

It sad that some of the people who served in Iraq/Afghanistan cannot find work here in the US. It's sad that you served your time and yet, you can be called back whenever they feel like doing so. Thank you for serving.

Thanks for explaining this so well. I know a lot more about how it works for the marines, but I had been really curious about how all that works in the army. It sucks that now that things have calmed down in iraq, afghanistan has now taken its place in level of danger. I really hope Obama will effectively resolve this situation too.

    Ryan,

I was in Iraq from March 03 - March 04 with the Reserves. I had 6 years Reserve and 2 IRR on my contract, but I stayed in the Reserve all 8 for fear of being called out of the IRR and in the Reserve I could transfer units just by getting the commanders' approval (especially helpful when the rumors start flying about getting deployed again). I had some rough experiences and the thought of them sending me back after I had re-adjusted kept me awake at night. I spent 4 more years in the Reserves after getting home, jumping from unit to unit once word came around that the one I was in might get deployed again, and I finished my 8 in June of 08. It's a big relief, and I can tell you that the time when you're completely free from the military will come no matter how far away it might seem. In all honesty, it feels like you can finally breath again when that day comes. It's funny, I had actually decided that if I was going to be sent back after being home, I was going to purposely break my foot. I handled being over there just fine, but re-adjusting after I came home was hard enough the first time and I knew I wouldn't be able to do it again. It made perfect sense to me at the time (I'd get out of the Army, I'd have a cast for a while, I wouldn't be able to run that well, but I hate running anyway). Don't do anything crazy like that (or do something like that, but only if it's what you know you need to do to protect yourself) and don't let anyone call you a coward for not wanting to go back. The only cowards are the a-holes who sent us over there and then ignored the problems we had to carry home with us. Hang in there, and stay lucky.

My husband is on his second deployment in 3 years. He is in the michigan national guard. He was first in Iraq in 2004 &2005 and now 2008 & 2009 in Afghanistan. We now have 2 boys . One on the the first deployment. And have been resently told that when he is supposedly back in August will be leaving in early 2010. So Not to be a damper I don't think Obama really is going to change things with the military deployed, just the location. I feel the Military is a rare few. What I mean, is that only curtain type of people actually could do it, I know I couldn't, But I honor my Husband and the other soldiers that do. My husband See's it as his duty for his family and his country. ( Some of the stories he has told me , and pictures I have seen proves that.) Thank you for your Time and the sacrifices you have made. Didn't want to babble on but to many people just don't get it, and really have very BIG OPIOIONS. Just wanted a military wifes view known.. Take care and live life to the fullest! And keep on striving for what you want it life!
