All blacks, including those in Southern states (if you would've read in my statement) weren't freed until 1863. However, don't think blacks were treated with humane dignity in any northern state simply because slavery was abolished there. Because we all know blacks were lynched, raped and murdered for 100 more years following the Civil War during the Jim Crow era.

I liked this song because Ryan's admitting that he comes from a city that's stuck in 1863, the year before blacks were freed from slavery. Basically, he's admitting that his upbringing took place in a overtly racist rural setting, which explains his overtly racist rural attitude towards Devyn. But of course, no one caught that. They just laughed at his redneck twang song like idiots. So much for post-racial America in the age of Obama.
